FoundryVTT: How to Update Everything

In this guide we will explain how to update everything in FoundryVTT. This includes the Game Systems, the Modules and, of course, the client software itself. This will show you how to update, and explain when the best time is to update.

Game Systems

The game systems can be installed and updated from this page. This is usually determined by the game, and version, you wish to play. For example, You can download Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition, Warhammer, and dozens more game systems here.

Updating this is relatively easy. You can simply click “update” on the right. In the case of DND5e, it gets updated every few weeks with patches, additional features and updates.

At the bottom, you can see an orange URL. This will actually usually take you to a website where you can see the update, what is involved and (if it has been up long enough) you can also see issues that people are experiencing, which is a good way to know if there are major issues with the system or even compatibility issues with modules.

Add-on Modules

You have two options when it comes to modules. You can update each module individually, or update them as a whole. By clicking the little padlock symbol you will prevent those modules from updating, even if you click “update all,”

The modules can be downloaded by clicking "Install Module” which will allow you to get them. We will discuss this in more detail on the website in another article.

Updating the modules is simple enough, the complicated part is knowing when to update your game to be compatible with the modules.

Client Software

This is easy enough. You simply go to the “Update Software” tab and click “Check For Update.”

Here are some of the complications you could encounter:
1. It may ask you to be an administrator, or say you lack permissions. If this happens you can close Foundry and then locate it (on your taskbar, desktop, start menu) and then you right-click it and “open as administrator.” For Mac, you should already be running it as an admin if your user account is set up to do so. Otherwise, you may need a password from the admin of your system.
2. Modules may not yet be compatible. If you’re unsure you can always check the subreddit for the most up to date list of supported modules. It’s usually pinned to the top, particularly during the big update launch period. Once your modules list is all compatible, you are safe to update. If you do it before you should be prepared for your modules to either cause issues or not work at all.

It is generally advised that you wait for the update to be out at least a few days before you actually go ahead and update your system.
