Nintendo unveiled the first details for Amiibo, a new feature they are releasing for Wii U that is somewhat similar to Skylanders.
Smash Bros. for Wii U, which is scheduled to release Holiday 2014, will be the first game to support Amiibo. Each figurine will retain individual level data and beefed up stats for customized Smash characters. This will include support for custom move sets. Nintendo's Amiibo will use the near-field communication sensor of the Wii U GamePad as the means to exchange information to and from the figurine.
Nintendo has said that multiple games will support amiibo, including the recently released Mario Kart 8.
