Microsoft has confirmed an October 26 release date for its Surface tablet. The Surface will go on sale alongside the next version of its operating system. Windows 8 release date was revealed earlier this month, also as Oct 26th.
Surface products will be running Windows 8. There will be two available for purchase. The first will be Surface for Windows RT and the second will be Surface for Windows 8 Pro.
Microsoft said in its SEC filing that "suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC." Speculation is that the Surface tablets could cost as little as $500-$600, while more expensive ones could top $1,000.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said earlier this month that the company plans to turn up the heat on Apple by competing in all areas of technological innovation, beginning with its current focus on Surface.
